Conditions for the residence monks at Wat Thaworn Temple.

Mahapanya Vidayalai is an affiliated institute of Mahachulalongkronrajavidayalai which offers Bachelor degree on Buddhist Philosophy (major in Mahayana Buddhism). Here, we have over 40 students from all over the south-east Asia. Students who come to study here stay neighbor monasteries around Hatyai. Students who wish to stay here in the MP.V dormitory, has to take the permission from the Administration office or the Abbot of the temple. The dormitory is for the benefits of students who have interest to study here. Students whoever come to stay here have to follow the certain rules and regulations to maintain the environment of university and as well as the temple. Despite this is the Mahayana temple and university, here all sects of Buddhism (Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana) live together exchanging the different concepts, traditions and views. Mahapanya has enough rooms for the monks who come to stay here. Theravada sangha residence under the Ksitigarbha’s statue, where five big rooms are available. Mahayana monks stay in the multi-purposes building opposite to the MP.V administration office and whereas the staffs and Vajrayana monks stay in the first building on the left hand side of main gate.

As mentioned above the students monks who stay here, have to follow some rules that are required as a Buddhist monk and being a student.

  • Monks who want to stay here should take permission from the senior monk or administration office or from the lord abbot and founder of Mahapanaya Vidayalai.
  • Monks who stay here should participate in the morning and evening chanting. (Mahayana monks in nine stories building, Theravada monks in Three Buddha status hall)
  • Have to walk for alms round and come to eat two meals a day must be together in the dining hall.
  • Residence monks should participate in the weekly cleaning days - Saturday and Sunday.
  • Besides the study and work at university, residence monks have responsibility towards each and everything around the temple.
  • Monks should behave according to Thai acceptation from monks.
  • If the student is free they can volunteer to help temple work such as talk to tourists, taking care of environment around, instead, temple is willing to pay for your kindness but students must record their working hours, date and time.
